Winter Hinder

The best thing to do when weather hinders your riding activities, is to plan those riding activities for when it’s warmer and the roads are clean.  Get those calendars out. Spring time is just around the corner and I’ve got 5 weeks of vacation… and I know if I don’t start this process, rallies I really want to go to slide on by.  Don’t let it happen to you.  Where do you want to go? What do you want to see?  Our favorite mode of transportation gives us adventure as we go from waypoint A to waypoint B.

There are so many activities for us to choose from. A club campout at one of the state parks, rallys, festivals, races, bike shows, and yes maybe even shopping excursions.  It’s all good!  The key is to start the planning process.  There are events I like to go to and places I’d like to visit as I am sure there are for you too, and what better time to make and communicate our plans.  If you have ideas, we would like to hear them so we can plan our club activities.  Please feel free to email me or any of the officers.

Helpful sites for planning.

New Years Day Club Breakfast & Ride

Seven or eight folks attended the New Years Day breakfast ride.  I can say it was a ride because there was one rider – Randy Hermes

The Breakfast Ride…

4 riders braved their way into the frigid bowels of southern Indiana. Lead by the new VP Greg Culers the group rode to Rising Sun. The weather was crisp and enjoyable. One rider (Bill Gardner) peeled off in Rising Sun. Probably had some hot cash lookin' for a home in a slot machine. The remaining three riders then blazed trials for home. A good time was had by all.

Minutes of the January Meeting.

Held at Hueston Woods lodge on 1/13/2001
Called to order by President Bob Ulrich at 8:20
Minutes of the December meeting read by Jim Smith and approved.
Treasurers Report: $482.03 current balance.
$246.50 in the AMA Fund
$235.53 available funds

Old Business – OH RA donated $40 towards a brick at the Motorcyclist Memorial Foundation in addition to the $50 donation from Bill Gardner.  It was voted unanimously to spend $60 more to have Gary Paine’s name engraved on the wall.

** For more info on the Motorcyclist Memorial Foundation.

New Business – A new arrival at the Campbell houshold. Randy & Amy's baby: Jack Douglas Campbell  was born on December 17th at 2:29pm. He weighed in at 7 pounds 6 oz. and was 19 inches in length. Mom and baby (and Dad, too) are doing fine.

Mary Pierce posed the question of whether a memorial should be done for all lost members.

Dues are due by March meeting – please note any club affiliations such as MOA, RA, AMA, IBMWR and any rides/activities you have planned out.

Ed Eismann’s proposal to change the format of our meetings from individual’s homes to a site or sites that can accommodate a meal and a meeting was discussed. The discussion seemed to lean towards a mix of hotel/restaurant eat-n meet, in-home meetings, and event/rally meetings would be the best of all worlds.  If anyone knows of good place that could accommodate our group, and not cost an arm and a leg, speak up.

Bill Berry’s “Alternative MOA Campout” on July 28th was brought up again. The T.W.O Campground in northern Georgia seems to be the best choice, but the location is open for debate. A couple of other locations might be Turkey Toms in Ferguson, N.C. and Riders Roost near Boone, N.C.

Joe and Chris Berry volunteered to have the Feb. meeting.
The Pierces volunteered to have the March meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00

The 50/50 drawing was won by our esteemed President, Bob Ulrich.

This was my first Hueston Woods meeting and I must say it was a great time. Thanks goes out to the wedding party that cleared out for our meeting and left the beer tap.  A head count of 30 members were in attendance… and not a single bike in the parking lot.  Like me, you had to have wanted to ride your bike there on Saturday afternoon.  Sure glad we all had sense not to.  Sunday’s weather turned sour just as the weatherman said.

New V.P. Asks for Ride Ideas

Newly elected V.P., Greg Cullers, is still asking club members to help him come up with ideas for rides, so if you have a favorite road or ride, let him know. Get that mapping software out.

Miscellaneous Ramblings from the President

Welcome to the new millennium! Yes, I’m one of those math-headed weirdo’s that insists on starting to count at one. And now for a little of this and a bit of that.  The wheels of progress continue to grind forward on the memorial to Gary Paine. I’ve got a few loose ends to tie up before we send our request to the Motorcyclist Memorial Foundation. I’m hoping that we will be advised when the inscription is in place; it would be a good ride to territory we don’t normally visit. Hopefully you’ve all been turning in your ideas for club events with your dues. Greg is looking forward to providing some interesting outings this year, but would really appreciate your suggestions. We officers will be holding another “board” meeting soon. We’ll be hammering out a recommendation for the year’s meeting schedule based in part on the suggestion Ed Eismann presented at the January meeting. We’ll also discuss whatever else we think of in the interim. Wish us luck.  Just before the last meeting Tom Raybuck told me that the Battle Creek club would be holding one of their fall meetings at his home (yes, in West Chester), and suggested that we consider holding our meeting in conjunction with theirs. Whattaya think?

I recently received word that the Western Reserve club would be holding their Sidecar Campout in honor of Steve Dumek this year. Steve died this past summer as a result of a brain tumor. He had been a longtime participant in the Buckeye State Rally and the subsequent Sidecar Campout. Mike should have more details on this event elsewhere.

Until next month, keep those batteries charged!

Membership has its privileges
When you renewed your membership to the GCBMWR we asked that you name the other clubs in which you are members of also.  I’m a member of the MOA, RA, AMA, and IBMWR (Internet BMW Riders) in addition to our local club.  Being a member means you get a magazine or a newsletter. But that’s the tip of the iceberg.  Your local club, you are supporting not only gets you this newsletter, but the opportunity to share your passion of riding with local friends.  That’s not all.  Did you know that as a member of the GCBMWR you get 10% off any purchase at Tri State BMW? That alone in one visit can pay off the cost of dues.
The MOA not only sends 12 magazines a year, you get a patch, a decal, and ID card.  Best of all you get the Anonymous Book. Published annually with updated material, this book lists BMW MOA members who are willing to aid and assist (as indicated) in cases of emergency or just sociability. With 12,000 members this book is an invaluable tool to have on the road. $25/year
The RA is smaller and more focused on the machine and the company. Their magazine, OTL (On The Level) doesn’t have as many pages or photos as MOA’s ON (Owners News), but is harder hitting journalism and a bit more opinionated.  The RA publishes 12 issues of OTL, and you also get your choice of a patch or decal, and an ID card. $20/year

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is a 270,000-member organization with an unparalleled history of pursuing, protecting and promoting the interests of the world's largest and most dedicated group of motorcycle enthusiasts. If you like to receive email, this club won’t disappoint.  You can subscribe to the “Listserver” and begin getting 50 or so emails/day or you can choose the digest and get 5 – 10 larger emails.  Either way, having this resource has proven to be priceless.  And priceless is what it cost to subscribe.  To become a President, as all members are, subscribe at: http://www.ibmwr.org/

** Motorcyclist Memorial. Late in 1992, a group of dedicated motorcyclists conceived the idea of a monument for lost bikers. The dream slowly grew into reality with the formation of the "Motorcyclists Memorial Foundation" formed on December 16, 1993. This foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the permanent memory of brothers and sisters lost. The "motorcyclists Memorial" is located on a grassy knoll near Hopedale, Ohio on a site provided by the Hopedale American Legion Post 682.
