The Red Ribbon StorySubmitted by Jenny E.As I have brought my tape in with me today I will tell the Red Ribbon Story in full. Michael Parkinson = MP Michael Crawford = MC MP talking about MC role in Billy-"It must have put a great physical strain on you Michael, was there any sort of one physical part of you to actually collapse?" MC - "Oh my poor legs went, they have always had a lot of sympathy oh... ah, at the end I should of had an operation because something because of the dancing. It put such a strain on me the tap dancing in particular. It caused something wrong with my blood circulation in particular. I had to go into hospital and have an operation as soon as I finished in the show. But I stayed on another 9 months and finished my 2 years and on May the second, we finished on May the 5th, and on May the 2nd I went into hospital and on May the 3rd I had my operation... And ah.. wonderful surgeon and wonderful anaesthetist. They didn't put a step wrong I was I didn't come to for two days I was so tired. They said you must have been exhausted....[laughing.] And when I came I just remember, I was lying it was the middle of the night I came to. Your tongue is 3 times the size of normal you after and anesthetic you don't feel that clever. And I remember looking up into the eyes of this old Irish Nurse and she said and she said oh come along come along now. Excuse me for my the Irish people for my accent...[laughing.] "She said, 'Come on now you are gonna have a bed bath.' And I said I haven't been anywhere, there is no point in having a bath as no one is going to see me. But she was insisting so one hand was taken out of the bed and she started to wash this hand and I was looking ah and said I want water and she said, 'You are not having and water now'....[laughing] ...'I've got to wash your hands for you'..[laughing]...'And now I am going to wash your other hand for you.' I knew what she was doing but I suppose she thought I didn't know which was my hand and which was my... And then she washed my and my face and then rubbed around .. because they were very friendly people, they were lovely. [laughter] "Then she started to wash my chest and with that she came to a dead halt and said, 'Right, oh, I want you to take this flannel and wash your private parts.' So I said I really don't want to wash my private parts. 'Don't be a dirty boy,' she said, 'just wash your private parts.'...[laughter]....So I took hold of the flannel in the water and I lifted the sheet up and I looked down and I came up and said...'Have you seen that?' [Laughter]. Nurse: 'I will not be looking down there...' I think she had just been to confession and so I ... laughter ...and so I took one.. [laughing] I took one more look under the sheets and there at the base of.... at the base of wherever was this great big red ribbon tied in a bow. Some nurse had tied it at the end of the operation and I... [laughing] ... and I was.. to make me feel better....[laughing]" MC-"Am I allowed to tell that story?" MP-"Oh, surely" ....[laughing]
