| From the Rector | Prayers of the People - Your Prayers Thanks be to God for all fathers! Somehow, on Fathers’ Day we did not say a prayer of thanksgiving for all those paternal figures in our lives who have blessed and continue to bless us. Mea culpa! During our Sunday worship the Prayers of the People are your prayers. Per parishioners’ request, we have just added both the Anglican and Diocesan Cycles of Prayers to them; I hope you will add your prayers as well. What prayers of thanksgiving, or intercessions for others’ healing or safety or …, would you like to hear in our corporate prayer? How about birthday, baptism, anniversary, or other celebratory dates? Perhaps on your way to church you heard something in the news you think needs our prayerful attention. (If something of epic proportions happens between 7 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, chances are I will not know about it!) You can add your prayers in any of the following ways:
Finally, if you are leading the Prayers of the People at the 10:00 service, please be sure to check for any additional prayers in the narthex just before the service. Thank you all.

| Dohn May 2007 E-letter [No. 34] | Anita
and Michael Dohn are physicians serving as missionaries with La Iglesia
Episcopal Dominicana through the South American Missionary Society.
They live with two of their four daughters in San Pedro de Macorís
in the Dominican Republic. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Davíd is a nine-year-old orphan who lives with his Haitian grandmother in a batey (workers’ camp) about 20 kilometers from the city. She speaks only Creole, though Davíd is bilingual. Davíd has tuberculosis. His therapy requires daily shots as well as taking a complicated set of pills by mouth. The regional public health hospital referred him to the Diocesan clinic here. We provided Davíd with some clothes. We also arranged for a Creole-speaking health promoter living in an adjacent batey to give Davíd’s injections and oversee his TB therapy. Officially, the Clinic’s community health program claims 120 volunteer community health promoters working with nearly 3,000 families (about 13,000 people). The promoters in this network were all trained as part of organized projects. They have had ongoing activities and support of various kinds over the years. They have developed into true community assets working with local community councils or the Dominican Public Health department. However, the promoter helping Davíd is not one of those 120 promoters. There are just over three dozen “unofficial” health promoters. We have trained promoters over the years in circumstances that were not ideal—circumstances where we had little expectation that the group would survive intact to work for the community’s benefit. In some cases, we were simply asked by someone to give the training without much expectation of an ongoing program; in other cases, our judgment was that the community lacked sufficient “infra-structure,” usually meaning that there was no community organization (like a community council) to serve as a base for an ongoing community program. Our motivations for offering the training in less than ideal situations have been varied, but mostly it is just hard to turn down people who want to be trained when we have the time and resources to do it. Nevertheless, these unofficial promoters have been well-trained, are still out there, and we know where they are. So, when a situation arises like Davíd’s, we know who might be a willing recruit to help out. The public health regional hospital refers patients to the Diocesan Clinic because they know we can get the job done—though we may have to use some unofficial channels to do it.

| From Outreach | Many thanks to everyone who has been using gift cards for Kroger purchases. Holy Trinity received about $500 from Krogers in the first two months of using the cards. We will continue to earn 4% of purchases as long as we use them. Funds earned are earmarked for outreach. If you do not have a card and want to participate, please contact Judy Shaw (523-3493) or Linda Church (523-4356). This is an easy way to increase our ability to help people in need, locally, nationally and internationally. |
| From the Episcopal Community Services Foundation | This month, we ask your prayers for ministries across the diocese that help people to build self-sufficiency and dignity. Here is a recent success reported by Allison DeHart from the ecumenical Partners in Hope, which your gifts to ECSF help sustain through a grant to Trinity, Troy: “Mike came to Troy, Ohio via a temporary homeless shelter hosted by four of Partners in Hope’s sponsoring churches and St. Joseph’s House during the cold winter months. He is a painter by trade, and has been working odd jobs earning money to pay off his debts. Partners in Hope helped him obtain car insurance so he could drive to his jobs. We printed flyers for his painting business. He has proven to be a hard worker and very skilled. We recently helped him by covering a portion of the cost of a classified ad in the newspaper promoting his painting business. He has had results and is starting to line up jobs for the summer. To express his appreciation for our help, Mike has offered to power wash and stain the deck that serves as our entryway here at Partners in Hope." |

| Gardens Readied for Summer | Gardeners who know what it means to ready spring gardens for summer worked to make a difference with weeding, pruning, clipping, and frequent watering. Please express your appreciation to Frank Jordan, Lila Greer, Dick Nault, Sally Southard—and to Mary Poppendeck, who uses who her MU lunch hour to come and water the annuals which she and Neil planted under the Holy Trinity sign of welcome. Concerned to conserve water, Sally is watering on rare occasions only the three trees planted in 2005. |
| Work Day Saturday, August 11 | All members of Holy T who love tidied and trimmed gardens are invited Saturday, August 11, 9 am – noon, to bring tools for pruning, weeding, clipping—tools for other jobs you believe need to be done. Call Jackie at the office with any suggestions you have of work that needs doing—or call Sally at 523-5511 after August 1. |
