As always, thank you for your continued generous support of the pantry. We really need dishwashing detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, body wash. No time or energy to shop? Rector's Ramblings: "How do I become an Episcopalian?"

This question has been posed to me by a number of people since I’ve been at Holy Trinity. We become Episcopalians officially by being confirmed or received in the church. Bishops confirm and receive. On Pentecost, May 11th, 2008, Bishop Breidenthal will be with us at Holy Trinity to celebrate Pentecost and confirm or receive anyone who is interested and ready. I will be leading gatherings for the preparation of any of you who may be interested.

Sometimes we call the gatherings “inquirers’ classes,” because they are for those who wish to inquire about the Episcopal Church, its history, identity, tradition, etc. Even if you have already been confirmed or don’t think you want to be confirmed but want to know more about our church, please tell me of your interest! I also strongly encourage those interested to attend Adult Forum, especially September 30th–October 21st (Anglican Identity) and December 2–23 (Anglican Spirituality), both facilitated by Peter Williams and Cleve Callison. This should be a relaxed, fun, and informative exploration for all of us who “inquire.”

--Karen

Millenium Deveopment Goals (MDGs)

On Sunday, October 28  , the topic for the Adult Forum will be the MDGs or Millenium Development Goals. Ariel Miller, Director of Episcopal Community Services Foundation (ECSF), will be the featured speaker. Please join us from 9:15–10:15 a.m. to greet Ariel and learn about the MDGs.

Interim Report on the Campaign to Pay Off the Loan

I'd like to report on the success of the Finance Committee's effort to raise $24,000 in a short time so that we can pay off the balance of our loan. As of Sept. 20th the parish had received contributions totaling $8880, so after less than three weeks, we've reached more than one-third of our goal. All funds received will be applied promptly to the remaining principal balance of the loan. This is a great accomplishment in a short time. Thanks to all who responded so promptly and generously to the appeal for funds. If the parish community continues to respond in a similar fashion, we will meet our goal and pay off the loan completely! Thanks be to God!

--Yours, Jim Michael
Finance Committee

Announcing an Earth Institute Class: "Global Warming: Changing Course"

This question has been posed to me by a number of people since I’ve been at Holy Trinity. We become Episcopalians officially by being confirmed or received in the church. Bishops confirm and receive. On Pentecost, May 11th, 2008, Bishop Breidenthal will be with us at Holy Trinity to celebrate Pentecost and confirm or receive anyone who is interested and ready. I will be leading gatherings for the preparation of any of you who may be interested.

Adult Forum examines Anglican Identity

Beginning on September 30th, Adult Forum will present a 4-week series examining what it means to be a member of the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church, and Holy Trinity parish. We’ll present historical information about the development of the Anglican Communion from its English roots, history in America, and worldwide growth. We’ll also reflect on how we see our own identity at this time and place as the Communion faces some of the greatest challenges in its history. Adult Forum meets Sundays at 9:15; a nursery is available.

Suggested reading: “Anglicanism: A Very Short Introduction” by Mark Chapman (Oxford University Press, paper)
Coordinators: Cleve Callison and Peter Williams

Sep. 30: The Church of England and Anglicanism
From the beginnings through the 16th-century break with Rome; cross-currents of Protestantism and Catholicism, tradition and renewal through the centuries.
            Presenter: Peter Williams
Oct. 7: How do you understand your Anglican identity?
Interactive session with participants reflect on how they became Episcopalians; discussion of what the church is (and perhaps more importantly) is not.
Presenters: Cleve Callison and Karen Burnard
Oct. 14: The Episcopal Church in America
How the Anglican tradition developed in a land without a monarch.
            Presenter: Peter Williams
Oct. 21: The Anglican Communion in the 21st century
Doctrinal and cultural divisions threaten the very unity of the Anglican community. But what is the nature of that unity? Can it be preserved? Will it? Should it?
Presenters: Cleve Callison and Karen Burnard

“...that virtuous mediocrity which our Church observes between the meretricious gaudiness of the Church of Rome and the squalid sluttery of fanatic conventicles”

--Simon Patrick (1626-1707), bishop of Ely

Our last note was about how uncomfortable I felt examining burn wounds by the flame of a single candle, leaning close to a mattress under a mosquito net.

I did not write that we knew all the children who had been in that house fire. They were regular and active attendees at the “Bible story-handicraft-sandwich & juice” activity that we ran weekly for about two years in that neighborhood.

The little girl’s burns are healing without complications, so far. ¡Gracias a Dios!

Her 13-year-old brother had been taken to Santo Domingo with extensive burns. He died within a week. He told his mother that, although he did not want to die, he knew Jesus and would be with Jesus. He reassured her that she should not be worried for him and that everything would be fine. He told her that she should keep a strong faith.

He died with tranquility. His parting testimony touched everyone who knew him in that barrio.

                            Keep praying, Anita

UTO Ingathering is coming!

On October 14th we will solicit the congregation for donations to this worthwhile fund. In 2007 the UTO has been able to fund 104 applications totaling $2,439,342. Unfortunately, this is only a fraction of the 202 requests totaling $8,141,477 which were received. Perhaps next year there will be more funds received and fewer people disappointed. Please help by adding coins to your blue box each day and prayers of thanks.

From Outreach

Just a reminder that everything on the Sharing Shelf goes to the new Choice Pantry, and things for our own Community Dinner pantry (which as you know are non-food items) go in the box so marked. Items especially appropriate for the Sharing Shelf include the following:

pasta and pasta sauce
cereal
peanut butter
canned main dishes (chili, ravioli, stew, etc.)
canned fruit and veggies
canned meat and fish

It is also appropriate to put non-food items on the sharing shelf for the Choice Pantry, including cleaning products, personal care items, laundry detergent.

It is always helpful to double-check the expiration date on food items before putting them on the Sharing Shelf, as apparently out-dated items arrive at the Pantry with surprising frequency!

Thanks as always to those who are faithful in bringing items to the Sharing Shelf.

They’re in!

By the midnight Sept. 15th deadline, ECSF had received 48 grant proposals from 37 congregations across the diocese to aid community ministries in 2008. Sister Episcopal churches are requesting small sums to leverage the time and treasure they are putting in themselves, often at great sacrifice. You probably know several of these projects first hand: think of His Place dinners at St. John’s Columbus; the Interfaith Hospitality Network in Xenia; St. James Pantry in Piqua. We’ve got several first-time requests for creative new ministries, like the diabetes screening and health education offered at by All Saints Portsmouth during the Loaves and Fishes dinner.

Please pray for the Saints Like You who are bringing hope and help to beleaguered neighbors in God’s name. And please donate to ECSF. We’re your own diocesan charity, created to support the community ministries of Episcopal congregations right here in Southern Ohio. If every Episcopal household gives just $15, we could fully fund this year’s requests! You can send a check to

ECSF c/o Diocese of Southern Ohio

Cincinnati, OH 45202

or give online at <www.ecsfsouthernohio.org>. All gifts are tax-deductible.
