Winter Adult Forum Series: Facets of Faith
In January, Adult Forum will begin a series of five sessions, “Facets of Faith.” In these sessions, guest speakers will share ideas about faith in relation to different aspects of our lives. The schedule:

January 13—Faith and Politics, Susan Kay
January 20—Faith and Food, Mary Jo McMillin
January 27—Faith and Food, Liz Wilson
February 3—Faith and Violence, Rick Colby
February 10—Faith and Relationships, Mila Ganeva

Adult Forum will not meet on January 6. Epiphany occurs on Sunday this year, so we will celebrate with a Feast following the 10:30 service

. . . Vestry Minutes. . .

Remember that Vestry decided not to have its minutes printed in the Triad, given its wide extra-parish distribution. If you would like a copy, look in the Narthex and/or the Bishop's Foyer. (Of course, if you can't get to church, just call the office to have one mailed to you.)

Prayer for Hungry Ohioans

Please pray and work to reverse growing hunger in our state because of rising food prices and the shortfall of emergency food. The gap between need and supplies is especially acute in the regional food banks in Springfield, Fairfield, and Logan which provide USDA and discount commodities to many Episcopal pantries and meal programs.

Thank God for Episcopalians who are working resourcefully to stretch scarce resources! This month we lift up Columbus-area churches whose menus for St. John’s His Place dinners are promoting community health by serving fresh fruits and vegetables that Franklinton neighbors cannot afford. We thank God for the role of Holy Trinity parishioners in the successful launch of Oxford’s new choice pantry, and for Episcopal volunteers throughout the state who are helping eligible people get food stamps so that more of the emergency food supply can be focused on those with no other recourse. Thanks to everyone whose donations to ECSF help our congregations to sustain and expand vital hunger ministries throughout the diocese!

Thanks for Recycling!

Kudos to all who have been recycling, especially those who have brought plastic bags, #1 plastic containers, batteries, and fluorescent lightbulbs to HT!

Plastic bags were shared with vendors at the Uptown Market during the summer and taken to Walmart’s recycling at other times. We’ve recycled A LOT of bags. If you go to the Oxford Kroger’s, you can now take your bags there if you want. They will take plastic grocery bags, drycleaning bags, other plastic bags, and case wrap (the sort of thing that comes shrunken around six-packs of water bottles, etc.). Of course, we’ll keep taking bags for recycling from the Narthex as well.

Keep bringing #1 plastic containers to HT, and we’ll schlep them to Ditmer for you.Remember to check for the #1 symbol on the bottom—a triangle with 1 in it. (Sometimes it is hard to see on the clear plastic.) Not all clear plastic containers are #1, and any plastics with numbers higher than #2 are not recyclable in our area.

If you live in an area without Rumpke recycling, let Susan Kay know, and she’ll tell you what you can recycle in Oxford with her help.

Not surprisingly, Social Justice hasn’t been entrusted with very many fluorescent bulbs for safe disposal yet, but even they do wear out. So remember that you can dispose of them safely through HT when yours give up the ghost.

Think of all the ways you can recycle those grocery bags, by the way. Reline your trash cans with them, save smaller ones for your favorite dog owner for clean up, stash them until summer for your favorite vendors at the market. The more we can keep out of the landfill, trees, and bushes, the better; and the longer we can prolong their use before they go to the landfill, the better! Or avoid them all together—buy cloth, or “just say no thanks” to the constant offers of plastic bags.

Again, thanks for saving God’s earth one small bit at a time.

  • Susan Kay
