Fifth son of a hotel owner in Stuttgart, Germany. Ran away from home to keep out of Kiaser's army.
Served aboard a whaler which was ice-bound once with only six surviving the ordeal. Reported they ate rawhide shoelaces and boiled boots for soup. Later was shanghied at Roanoke, Virginia, to serve aboard a slaver. ('Shanghied' is a term for kidnapped and forced to serve on a ship or risk being thrown overboard.) Made two trips to Africa. Remembered well the horrors of the slave trade.
Enlisted in Union Army Cavalry early in the Civil War due to his aversion to slavery. He became Sgr. Orderly to General Phil Sheridan and carried messages to men like Grant and Sherman. Was wounded at the battles of Shiloh and Antietam. Had his big toe cut off by saber.
After the Civil War,
settled in Clermont County, Ohio . Married first wife. Had
one son, Charles. Divorced. Married second wife. Had
one son, George. Returned to Germany around 1900 to visit family.
