This summary of the life of Harry E. Zuber, one of the famous and outstanding sons of Clermont County, Ohio, was compiled by his son, Richard, from family sources and his memory of this remarkable man.
Harry Edwin Zuber was the only child of Charles Zuber.
Harry's mother was Melissa Edwards of the Pioneer Manhattan Island family, and her grandfather founded Princeton University. Harry received his interest and life profession in the field of education from her.
Harry was born and grew up in Bethel, Ohio, Clermont County. His life story was written up in the Gazette once titled "Famous Sons of Clermont County", and read like a Horatio Alger novel success story.
An only child, son of Charles Zuber. He was a hard worker in school, working on farms summer vacations, and sports, especially baseball. After high school, he became a catcher on a Cincinnati semi-pro team, but could not hit over .300 to make it into the major leagues. He taught school in winter and worked summers at the Cincinnati Zoo, where he worked up to Manager of the Clubhouse at age 21. He overworked, with too much ambition and too many interests, and went to San Francisco, California, to recover his health. He worked for a year as a conductor and motorman on San Francisco streetcars at twenty-two years of age.
He came back to Ohio, met and fell for a rich farmer's daughter, Gertrude Geyer, of Clermont County. He courted her in a red Packard touring car and scared the horses of the farmers. They were married on 20 December 1913 in Covington, Kentucky. He then taught school in Milford and Moscow, Ohio, where Earl and Dick were born. These small children kept him out of the World War I draft.
Harry became a friend of Dr. Ewing, who had a great influence on his life for the next 10 years. Dr. Ewing was the head of Ohio State Dept. of ? in Columbus.
After Allyn was born in 1920, he decided at age 30 that to "get on" in Education he would have to have a college degree. With a wife and three children he became a grade school principal at Darrtown, near Oxford, Ohio, and began summer school at Miami University of Ohio. One full year of residence was required, so they rented a large house in Oxford and took in roomers (four, I believe) and boarders for dinner (six or eight) to pay their way, while he completed his Bachelor Degree in Education in 15 straight months. He was also pitcher on the Miami baseball team.
Gertie really worked, and Earl and Dick were in third and fourth grades at University School. From there Harry became the first Superintendent of Bath Township Consolidated School at Fairborn, a new town created by merger of Osborn and Fairfield near Dayton, Ohio. Once again, summers were spent at Columbia University in New York working for his Master's Degree.
