DAMPING TECHNOLOGIES, INC.
Stand-Off Damping Systems
OVERVIEW
Damping Technologies, Inc. has developed its proprietary Stand-Off Damping Systems to provide extremely high levels of damping performance while being extremely weight efficient. Stand-Off Damping Systems suppress noise, vibration, and/or high cycle fatigue damage due to resonance response. Candidate applications include:
Aircraft Fuselage Skin
Aerospace Structures
Automotive/Light Truck
Heavy Truck
Ships
Luxury Yachts
Industrial Machinery
Off-Road Equipment
Honeycomb Composite Panels
BENEFIT OF THE STAND-OFF DAMPING SYSTEM
Stand-Off Damping Systems are designed and manufactured by Damping Technologies, Inc. to deliver extremely high levels of structural damping with minimum weight addition. The unique and proprietary nature of the Stand-Off Damping System concept results in substantially higher strains in the viscoelastic damping material of the Stand-Off Damping System when compared to conventional constrained layer damping treatments. Higher strains in the viscoelastic damping material results in superior damping performance and enhanced damping performance relative to temperature.
INSTALLATION
The Stand-Off Damping System is provided with a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) which is protected by a release liner. Typically, individual damping system parts are provided die-cut or pre-trimmed to shape. Installation consists of simply peeling away the release liner, positioning the piece over the installation site, and pressing down. Installing the Stand-Off Damping System is easier than applying a bumper sticker. Some current Stand-Off Damping System customers report installation time savings of (90%) or more compared to competing damping systems.
COST ISSUES
The Stand-Off Damping System is typically added to existing structure. There are no re-design or replacement costs. Because the Stand-Off Damping System is extremely efficient, it is usually possible to utilize partial coverage strategies, thereby saving material cost when compared to other damping systems. Installation requires a minimum of time, skill, and capital investment. Suppression of resonance response generally results in diminished vibration, diminished noise, lower maintenance costs (high cycle fatigue issues), better product quality, and higher sales.
WEIGHT ISSUES
The Stand-Off Damping System is believed to be the highest performance and most weight efficient passive damping system on the market today. Several production versions utilize carbon fiber composite subcomponents which is processed in-house at Damping Technologies, Inc. Also, since the Stand-Off Damping System concept is extremely efficient, structures are typically treated with partial coverage which results in further weight savings.
APPLICATIONS
Damping Technologies tends to tailor its Stand-Off Damping System family of products to the particular application. Treatment component materials, viscoelastic materials, and coverage footprint are chosen based on the particular structural dynamics and temperature regime of the application site. Damping Technologies has a fully staffed structural dynamics laboratory and finite element analysis capability which is utilized for design, development, and optimization of its Stand-Off Damping System products.
Stand-Off Damping Systems are currently in production on (15) different applications - (2) specifically addressing high-cycle fatigue issues, (2) specifically addressing vibration suppression, and (11) addressing noise suppression. Note that Air Force 1 (The personal aircraft of the President of the United States) utilizes a Stand-Off Damping System.
MANUFACTURING AND QUALITY CONTROL
Damping Technologies has the manufacturing facilities and capabilities to manufacture application-specific Stand-Off Damping Systems and to manage and maintain the appropriate quality control. Damping Technologies also has full clean room packaging capability for spacecraft or launch vehicle applications.
