Winter themes are great for "PC" holiday cakes: snowflakes, snowmen, a scene with children making snow angels, animals in a winter scene. Also holly, poinsettias, pine cones and branches are not necessarily Christmas-y either. You could look at greeting cards for other possible ideas, too. There are always generic "holiday" cards available in addition to Christmas cards.

Sophie, Marida is at the hospital today with her husband so I will see if I can give you some pointers since you need to do this today. Yes, you can mix some green, maybe a little brown, and a bit of black until you get it the right color. Go easy on the brown and black until you get it just the way you want it and keep in mind, that this will darken some even after you put it on the cake so don't get it quite as dark as you think it should be. Good Luck! You'll do great!

I have done it with basketball, soccer and baseball. Since you have

Over to the left side of the cake, pipe 3 candles in various heights with like a #10 or #12 tube in red. Use about a #15 or #16 with goldish icing and pull up a flame out of the candles. At the bottom of the candles do a spray of poinsettias (I usually have these pre-made of royal so they are easy to plop on) - probably about 3 - maybe some pine cones and some green leaves. Do plain shell borders or whatever. Write the greeting and you are done.

There are two ways to go, cute and clever or practical. Often times the cute names are already taken. I used to use the name "Sweet Creations", but I had to change it because we moved and there was already a store in the area with that name. So now I'm using "Cake Creations by Jennifer". There are some advantages to this, even though I don't like it as much. For one, as Marida said when you use your name it makes it very unlikely someone would have the exact same business name, plus it makes it more personal. Second, it is very obvious from the name what you do, and third, by the first word of the name being "cake" people will find in the white pages, so you don't have to pay for a yellow page listing. If you're going to be doing pastries, donuts, cookies, etc, then of course you would want a broader sounding name, but you still want something that makes you sound special.

Take a sheet cake. Pipe simple shell borders on it. Do 2 sets of 3 balloons on each side of the top of the cake in bright colors - maybe hot pink, green, and yellow. Then add confetti streamers in the same colors. The balloons I usually have with black strings going down to the side of the cake. Then write your birthday message in one of the colors. The streamers, I usually do on the top of the cake, on top borders, and bottom borders, too. Then if you have some of those little non-paril balls in the all colors, sprinkle some of those all over the top of the cake. Makes a very festive cake and fits any age!

Since it's close to Christmas maybe a winter snow scene. Does the lady
snow ski?? Maybe a female snow skier with a message about the slopes
wishing the birthday girl happy birthday or something similiar.
How about making a Christmas wreath with the birthday ladies picture in

took 3-6"square cakes and made a TV on a base and where the TV screen

side of 2 of the cakes. Next place 1 of the small cut pieces on each
side of the uncut cake to make a large base and frost. Sandwich the
two large cut pieces together with some frosting and place on the base.
Pipe some TV controls on the right side. Take a picture of the B-day
girl wrap in saran wrap and place on "TV". If you didn't want to saran
wrap the picture I believe Dolores can make a edible copy of the
picture for you to put on the cake instead. Hope I explained this

I have a pair of 13 year old twins. For the last couple of years they
have wanted to decorate their own birthday cakes. I bake a couple of
round cakes and load up some disposable bags with various colors and
let them go to town. I try to limit the numer of tips used to cut down
on the cleanup a little. They enjoyed it so much that now my 10 year
wants to do his this year.
You may want to decorate two smaller cakes based upon each childs
interests. Sometimes we tend to think of twins as a "unit" instead of
individuals. How about a tiered cake with each girl deciding what to
put on "their" tier or each choosing their own flavor for "their"
tier. I personnaly would hesitate to do a tiered cake especially for
younger multiples because then you may run into the argument about
whose cake is bigger or mine is on top of yours which makes me more
important etc.
If your girls are into dolls how about baking two cakes in the Wilton
wonder pan and decorate them like their favorite dolls. If you were
planning on having a lot of people over for a party maybe bake two
dolls in the mini wonder mold pan and place them on top of a sheet cake
of the needed size.
I hope this gives you a couple of ideas. Any further questions don't

Hi,
The first thing that came to mind was bells. I believe Rosmary Watson
has some fondant presses in the shape of bells. You could then "paint"
them silver with luster dust and vodka or extract.
Also, I once saw a pattern for royal lace points made in the shape of
bells, very delicate and pretty. Once these dry, you could paint them
silver and use them as a boarder.

mixture before it sets to simulate fish in the stream. Put the "trout
stream" on top of the cake. Use the grass tip to pipe in some grass.
Maybe add some trees and other little plastic animals. Hope this gives

Subject: Have only 2 days for a trout fishing idea
My husband is a keen troutsman, and wants a trout theme birthday cake.
His birthday is in 3 days time, and I need ideas URGENTLY.
I was thinking of having a normal round cake with a slope on one side
(this becomes a waterfall) going into a round pool at the bottom. I was
going to make the waterfall out of coconut and the "water" out of cut
up jelly.
Any ideas on how I could decorate the edge of the cake and round the
pool, or any other ideas at all. (He does not want a "fish on a plate"
cake.
Thank you in advance.

I saw a picture in one of the olde Wilton Yearbooks of a cake decorated
to look like a fisherman's hat.
It was just a 2-layer round cake with a large ruffle (not too much
ruffle) around the bottome of the tier to look like the brim o the hat.
Then there was a band piped around the bottom base (above the brim).
Then all over the cake was piped fishing lures, bobbers, hooks, etc. If
your skill level isn't good enough to pipe all those things, you can
buy the real thing and place them on and around the hat.
Another idea would be to do a cake shaped like a tackle box with
fishing paraphenalia all around it. Depending on how much cake you
need, you could make it any size at all, but the best size would be a 3-
layer 7x11.
If you needed a lot of cake you could do the toolbox AND the hat.
Good luck!

Thanks for the great ideas, my husband is keen on the "fish stream"
concept. The idea of the fishing hat and tackle box is really
ingeneous, I will keep that in mind for another time.
I will use a tray to put it all on, on the one side will be the
waterfall over half of the round cake onto a second level, then the
other half will be cut up to simulate hills next to the river. It is a
great idea to put grass on it. I was hoping to try and cut the cake
next to the waterfall to make it look like rocks, (what colour do I
make them to look realistic?) and I have made cupcakes to simulate
rocks on the side of the pool.
Is there some way in which I can easily make a fisherman fly-fishing? I
am living in Botswana, Africa, and have found it difficult to find an
appropriate action figure (of some sort.
I thought of making balls of tinfoil in the jelly, to look as if there
are rocks in the water. I am wanting to ruffle the jelly above the
rocks, if I put coconut on top, will the coconut absorb the jelly and
go soggy?

Do you have any of the Roland Winbeckler pattern books. He has some cute ones in the sports patterns or I would ice the cake half in pale blue or white for the sky and then the other half in green for the grass and make it sorta hilly. Then figure pipe the other things like a flag pole with the #1 on it with the hole at the bottom of the pole. Then pipe the golfer on it like he has just swung and make little tracks were the ball has just gone around the hole and make the ball. If you know any figure piping at all, this is an easy cake to do. Congratulations on your up and coming business. That's the way I started - word of mouth and that is mostly what I still have after 35 years - the best kind of publicity to have - then you know people are satisfied.

We have a couple of golfer cakes we do. There is a golfer with the tees
and flags that you can put on a cake that you have covered the top with
the grass tube (355). The other one we do is to do the ball cake, mark
the dimples on it, cross a couple of golf clubs on the ball, write
Top-Flight and then put that on top of a sheet cake that has been
covered with grass from the grass tube. Also, this has been discussed
before and you can probably find it in the archives.

I think I saw a golpher figurine in one of the Wilton catalogs or you
may be able to find one locally since you need to get this cake done
QUICKLY. You could decorate the cake like a golpher is at a hole
trying to get the ball in. Maybe leave the hump in the middle of the
cake and only level off part to make it look like the rolling hills of
the course with the level part being the actual green. Pipe a black
dot to make the "hole", add a flag. You could use brown sugar and make
a "sand trap" that the golpher was trying to get out of.
How about a "water hazard" made out of jello jigglers or piping jell
between the golpher and the actual hole. You could make up several
"golf balls" out of fondant and place them in the "water hazard" like
the golpher has had a problem clearing the water.
Use the 233 grass tip to pipe grass for the "rough" of the course and
smooth out your frosting for the actual green.
Hope this helps a little. Good Luck!!!

You could put grass and flowers and maybe a tree on it, and then two
gravesites with those little humps of earth that covers new graves, and
two headstones with the names of the two ladies and maybe something
clever. Someone once posted "Lordy, Lordy - Look Who's Forty!" and I

Betsy,
I think I know what you are looking for It really isn't hard. This is how I make angel cookies, you can do the same thing using two round cakes.
I would use a 6 inch cake for the head. Then for the body use a larger round 8 or 10 inch pan then you slice each side of the cake at an angle so that you have a large triangle for the body and two smaller curved pieces for the wings. The wings then get fliped so that the curved piece is down and the striaght piece is up. I kind of angle them down a little but you could do them in what ever way you want.
When I make the cookies I ice the dress smooth and use some stars or some kind of texture for the wings. The face for a cake I would ice a beige and use a grass tip for hair and just put eyes nose and mouth. Really not as hard as it may sound.
Good luck,
-Lisa

if you think it's cold there, come over here!!!!
the past 4 mornings it has been in the neighborhood of 18 -- in *sunny
california!!!!!!*
this mornings headlines say entire citrus crop lost -- over 591 million
$$. we were just starting to recover from the same thing happening in
1990 :( i think our farmers need our prayers.
