They are trying to bring in Geraldine Randlesome from Canada and some other guest decorators from the Wisconsin area. There should be more information following convention. MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!

Where do you live? Wilton's has classes at their Woodridge facilities. They are more advance. Otherwise Michael's Craft store offers classes. I took all 3 classes there. It was a lot of fun. Also I will be taking some classes at a local cake store. Bev's world in Waukegan, Il has a lot of different classes to offer. She must be pretty good, cause they are always filled up.

Hi Linda,

I'm in Hamilton Ohio. It doesn't seem like you are close by here? My
classes will be starting in September. As will most others. You should
really check with your local supply shop. They would have classes. If
going to Penny's, Michaels or Joann's Fabrics for classes you may want
to first inquire about the experience of the teacher...IF there is any
choice. Usually a shop owner will try the hardest or be more
experienced also.

Subject: 1998 ICES Convention
I was asked today by a fellow message board friend why I hadn't put anything on about the convention in St. Paul, so here goes.

As always, it was like a big family reunion to the ones of us who have gone for so long! There was something like 1170 registered for the convention. Their new convention facilities are very nice. I only got to take in 4 or 5 demos, but they seemed to have a good variety. I got to see Dolores (message board creator) do her wedding cake demo. She didn't know why I was in there, but I told her you can always learn something from someone else. If you feel you can't, then you have quit learning and need to rethink your attitude!

The cakes were down in number this year, but next year Missouri is going back to States as opposed to random placing as it has been for the past 3 conventions. We hope this will encourage more people to bring cakes because without the cakes, what would convention be??

As always at convention, there is so much to see and do that you barely get time to eat or sleep. We were on the go and I don't think I got over 5 hours sleep any one night. However, there were 5 in my room, so just having time in the bathroom was a challenge! On Thursday night Dolores and Earlene (Chefs Dol and Pwdsugar) broadcast their cake chat live from the convention center. It was fun even though it didn't turn out quite as good as they expected. We also got to preview what the vendors would be showing new the next day.

The banquet theme was Northern Lights with a Jazz band. Diane Shavkin from New York was awarded the Wilbur Brand service award for her outstanding service to ICES over the years. The Hall of Fame award went to 2 very deserving people who have supported ICES for many, many years - Betty and Thurmon Lloyd of Oklahoma. Seven new board members were elected to the Board of ICES Directors. Kim Fess of Virginia was elected the new ICES President.

On Sunday night was the Night of Sharing where demonstrators were at round tables and shared their talents - some did demos during convention, but some didn't so shared their demo then. It is always a fun night of visiting and watching new demos. One of the newest things I saw at the vendor's night was Geraldine Randlesome's new way of making lace points - fast! I didn't get the pattern, but want to soon. It looked much easier. She had a pattern she laid down and then thinly spread royal icing over it and it made like 250 at a time. I didn't get to see the whole procedure so perhaps someone else can elaborate on this.

I'm sure others that were there can add something to this list of what went on.

Now, I'd like to invite all of you to start saving at least $10 a week (more if you can) to come to Kansas City for our 1999 convention. We gave everyone their money's worth in 1995 and we plan to do it again! The registration packets were given out in Minnesota and we have already gotten several registrations. This year, you will have to be registered for convention before you can order demo tickets. They will not be published in the newsletter, but will go out as soon as the demo list is prepared with a more detailed listing for each demo.

We are planning lots of fun events for our Missouri convention including an ICES Family Reunion - a Picnic in the Park (across the street from the Marriott Hotel), an ice cream social and our banquet theme is a "New Year's Eve Celebration". This is to ring out the end of the century - 1999 and venture into the new 2000 century! We've put a lot of thought into this as "Missouri Loves Company" is our slogan. We also have "free" parking! And we will have "hot" tea for those who don't like coffee!!

For more registration information contact: Millie Hohimer at MHohimer@AOL.Com

We'll be looking forward to your "company" in 1999 in Missouri!! Ya'll come!

I tried them and it works! I had some breakage but I didn't follow the
rules either...I always used egg white royal i. for lace points. I want
her ivy pattern. That would be a great accent for lots of cakes,
especially graduation!

Hi, Maxine:

Here's how to make a hyperlink:

Click on the folder that is yellow with a red heart. That will bring up the dropdown menu of "Favorite Places".

Click on "Add a Favorite Place". Type in the name to remember the place by. Type in the URL (web site address). Click ok.

Now, the "Favorite Place" your address that you just typed in will be in the "Favorite Place" listing. Just click on that place in the "Favorite Place" listing and hold that right mouse button DOWN as you drag the mouse bar over to the place where you want to have the hypertex link. Let go, and you have the blue hypertex!

Subject: Looking for ICES member feedback/ideas
As some of you already know, I was elected to the ICES Board at the last
convention. All the Board members are assigned to different committees,
and I am chairing two of them--Ways & Means and Publicity. I'm looking
for ways to beef up both of these areas, and while I have had a few
ideas myself, am anxious to hear what ICES members are interested in
doing.

Ways & Means. This is the committee that finds alternative ways to
raise money for ICES. Right now, the only thing it does is sell the
raffle tickets at convention to win a room and registration at the next
years convention (which, by the way, raised $2500 this year). Do you
have other ideas for ICES to raise money? If so, let me know.

Publicity. The name kind of speaks for itself, but basically the
primary activity of this committee is to publish and distribute the ICES
membership brochure (which is currently being extensively revamped).
Two requests on this one. 1) Some of the publicity ideas being kicked
around include website improvements, so if you haven't been to the ICES
website lately, please take a few minutes to go to www.ices.org and let
me know how you would improve it. 2) ICES needs to do a much better
job publicizing itself--did you know that ICES membership has been
declining?? This was one of the big points of Kim Fess' (new ICES prez)
speech at the convention this year, for those of you that weren't there
to hear it. So, if you were in charge, what would you do to increase
visibility of the organization?

I still have a couple of months before I have to get my
ideas/suggestions together for the rest of the Board to consider. But,
since some things take a lot of time to research and formulate, I would
appreciate your e-mails sooner rather than later. Please, *please*,
PLEASE, give me your feedback and ideas so I can help make ICES a better
organization for its members!!

Thanks!
Nannette Henderson

Congratulations Nannette!
I'll email you some ideas...

Ways & Means: The best way our cake club found to make money was through
an auction. Can you just imagine....25 people in the club brought in
over $400.00! And what enormous fun we had too! I don't know how this
could be arranged at a convention...wish I had an idea there. But I've
never seen decorators so willing to part with their money! LOL
We could bring wrapped or unwrapped items. New or used. Joke items
clear up to collectables and antiques. We had this one little
mouse...always wrapped and we all knew it would be back each year. We
laughed when we paid big bucks for that box. Then their was the bag of
fresh green beans/wrapped. What about this for Friday evening someway? I
swear its as much fun as the talent show...and thats saying a lot!
