I think when I called them, it was also more for NOT being with ICES. I
didn't tell them I was with anyone. Its always confusing!

One other thing, we are going to pay big bucks for parking - if we
drive, this year.

I'm staying at Days Inn - cheaper and closer to everything. I understand
it is booked. I read somewhere (ICES newsletter?) that recently there is
another hotel open to us because others are full.

One other way to 'get in' is to NOT say you are with ICES. See, they'll
leave SOME rooms open to other guests (not with ICES) and they won't
(probably as most don't) book solid just for us....tricky way to get a
room LOL

Hi

Well, I started by mailings to all my fellow Wilton Instructors in the area and then to all my students who were knowledgable. My list started with 60 and wittled down to 11 that responded. I sent a survey re: interest and times. I put on the bottom of the survey that this was funded by my own money and if it was not returned (I enclosed self addressed stamped envelopes) then they would not be mailed to again. Those that returned I called back. Only 3 (including myself) came to the first meeting. The second had 6 and we are on our 4th meeting with probably 8. That is a great start. 3 is better than one and we still had a great time. I just finished some flyers that we will all distribute to our local cake shop and all the stores that carry supplies such as Michaels, Joann Fabrics, So many Crafts and others. We meet at a public library so we will post there also. We have all agreed that we want knowlegable people. As we are all there to learn, we are all teachers write now and a couple have belonged to other clubs were beginners come in looking for free instruction. We just say there needs to be a basic knowledge (such as a few tip #'s and names of "objects" we use freguently) We will probably grow with our own students more than the general public. If you are a teacher or have taken a class, start with the others who took the class with you or the teacher. Maybe ask to have a class reunion and go from there. I will let you know how the flyers work. Have faith and don't give up. It took me a couple of years before I acted and know I am glad I did. The only thing is our 2 hour meetings aren't enough :) We tend to get into sharing and go on and on.

ICES has a publication on cake clubs that is pretty good--it has sample
bylaws and ideas for what to do in meetings. ICES used to have a cake

think they may have eliminated that position. There is a publications
person named Marilyn McGregor; her e-mail is wayne.mcgregor@sympatico.ca
She may be the person that you get the booklet from. It seems to stick

The reason she was able to still get a room when it was supposidly

other guests not with a convention. If you don't mention the convention
then you can sometimes still get in.

Lower cost: ICES may be getting a small 'cut' per guest. Whisch is fine
with me. We do need the money, that is why it may be cheaper if you
don't tell them you are with ICES.

I'm staying at DAY'S INN. I understand it is really the handiest. Its
hard to carry around all the bags and goodies you collect all day then
go to another hotel. The parking fees are terrible expensive by the way.

...all kinds of cakes and all kinds of needs.

BUT, for sure...make whatever packaging in such a way that it can easily
be checked by airline authorities. Once I put my cake in a plexiglass
box I made. That worked out perfectly...lace pieces with tip 00 too!

Which brings up a very funny story: Once I sent a 3 tier cake on a plane
(real one! 14-10-6 stacked) in a big tall cardboard box. The airline
made them cut a BIG hole in the top of the box so they could peep in.
THAT made the whole plane smell like buttercream icing and LOTS of
conversation. Besides...since it was too big for under the seat, they
were forced by Northwestern airlines to pay for a seat...not to mention
it was too heavy to carry when transferring planes!!! They rented a
wheel chair and he pushed her who had the BIG box on her lap...can you
just picture that!
Besides, the cake was for 'the' Mr Coors and you know how rich they
all are...So here is this couple in all there finery wheeling a BIG cake
through the airport. FUN! I laughed and laughed. The airline in
Cincinnati made a place for the cake...but NW sure wouldn't.

What tips does anyone have for getting cakes to convention by plane?
How do you pack them?  Do you carry-on or check them through? Obviously delicate things like gumpaste flowers can be packed separately, but how in the world do some of those people bring such big and elaborate displays, and from soooo far away (travelling all day with many plane changes, i.e. coming from South America, Phillippines, etc.!) ??? Or do you try to finish things once you arrive?
Or -- is the obvious answer -- Only take non-fragile round or square dummies with no extension/bridgework or lace points! LOL!  Thanks in advance for your good advice!

When you get to the registration area at the ICES convention, there should be a board for posting messages. You can post your ticket inquiry there. Include your name and state next to your name. Just do NOT put your room # on the board. What you should do is to put your name and room number in the ICES Brown Book. It will let people know you are there and where to locate you. The book is locked up at night and kept under "guard" so that only ICES members have access to it.

You might also mention it to the Registration person (a Minnesota person) in case he/she knows of someone who is looking for a ticket.

Just mention it to people at convention and perhaps someone will know of someone looking for a ticket.

Tammy, write an e-mail to Roberta (one of the show directors) at Prgibb@AOL.Com and she can give you the particulars on the one-day ticket thing. Hurry so you don't miss out. Sorry you can only be there one day as you need all the days!!! One day will not be enough to whet your appetite for what all is going on. Be sure to see the cake room where there should be nearly 1,000 displays and bring the camera!! Come early and stay as late as you can!

and we have all the non-Wilton classes in the area listed. I've taken
some from Jaci Salisbury before, and highly recommend hers.

Hi Everybody! I have a few questions about the convention. I am dying
to go. I had pretty much decided not to, because I am pregnant. Now I
am thinking about just going for one day. I would not be staying for
the banquet, would that make my registration any cheaper? Plus it would
only be for the one day? I wish I had thought more seriously about this
before now, it would have saved me quite a bit of $$ Thanks for any
input!!

Thank you,

Tammy

Hi Heather and Connie,

I also live in Illinois, Quincy or Macomb are about the biggest towns
close to me. Do you guys belong to ICES? ICES is the only thing I know
of. I just went to the July Day of Sharing last weekend. The one in
September is on the 27th (I think) in Naperville. Sounds like that
would be somewhat close for you. It would be about 6 hours away for me.
I don't think I'll be going since I'm expecting my second child in
October!

Heather,
I am from Illinois also, any luck on a cake club? Years ago, before I
started decorating cakes, there used to be one here. The decorator who
did most of the organizing went out of buisness. Let me know if you find
one. I am about 80 miles South of Chicogo.

I am looking for advanced decorating classes in Washington DC metro
area. Particularly, something like the Wilton classes for tiered cakes.
I would really like an intensive course, not just a "workshop". Any
help? I wouldn't mind traveling-but don't want to go all the way to
Chicago. thanks.

I feel terrible! I did find a hotel room (it is at the Days in), and
then I didn't check this board again. You were so kind to answer and I
feel so rude for not checking back to see if anyone answered me. Thank
you for your help. It might be fun to share a room with 3 other people
though, but I am probably too late!

They say to plan on about 2 months before you receive your ICES newsletter. You should get a welcoming letter when you join, I think - anyway, they used to send those out so I guess they still do. You'll get hooked and especially if you go to convention!

Thanks for your help with the roommate situation. I have that taken care of now. However, one of my roommates would like a ticket to the General Mills tour on Wednesday. Someone, in response to my original roommate post, said that they had or knew of a ticket that was available for that tour. I didn't pay that much attention to it at the time as I won't be there in time and I guess I didn't keep that email. Would the person who sent it - or anyone else who knows of a ticket - please contact me again? Thanks for your help.

For the ICES convention, the public can come in to see the cakes only on Saturday and Sunday. They pay a general admission of usually about $5. The cake room is the only area this admits the public to. If you are registered for the convention, you can attend all the demonstrations and functions of the convention such as the general meeting, banquet, and vendor's areas where all the great new cake decorating products are sold. Hope you are coming!

Have a great time at the convention!!! Wish I could be there this year.
If you will be wearing name tags, you can put a colored dot, star, etc..
on your tag (let's say all of the message board participants agree to
the color red) and look for other message board participants by scanning
for the colored dot. Or if you have a display, maybe you can tie a
ballon (in the agreed upon color) at your station so you can be easily
identified. I use the ballon method when meeting friends at a large
outdoor (or indoor) event, it works every time. Hope this helps.

Lisa:]

ICES is the International Cake Exploration Societe for anyone interested in the art of cake decorating. There are annual conventions. This year's convention starts next week (The week of Aug. 3rd). The office dates, I believe are Thursday through Sunday.

ICES is one big family of caring and sharing cake decorators. At the convention there are 4 days of demonstrations, the general membership breakfast & meeting, voting for board members and officers and the awards banquet which are all included with your registration.

This year, there will be a members talent show on Friday night. On Thursday there will be a dinner cruise with dancing. On Wednesday, I believe it is a dinner theater. The talent show is free. The tours are not.

With membership of $27.00 for USA members and a slight additional postage charge for non-USA members, you would receive a 24-page newsletter with a centerfold (4 pages) of color pictures of cakes and displays from the previous convention.

For more information, you can visit the ICES site at: http://www.ices.org/

You can contact one of the show chairman in regard to the convention which is to be in St. Paul, MN this year: Roberta Gibbons - PRGibb@aol.com

For more information on membership: Mary Gavenda, Membership Chairman - MGsoffice@aol.com
Just tell Mary I gave you the information.

If you have any other questions, just e-mail me: shavkin@aol.com

I was wanting some help with setting up a time of the day and days of the week for people to meet in the cake chat room. Everyone is having a very hard time finding anyone there. We keep missing each other. Just now, I missed someone by 1 minute. Very frustrating! Anyway if we could come up with set days and times to meet in the chat room it would sure help. We could set up topics of discussion also, if wanted. Also I was thinking about the aol chat that will be taking place at the convention. If there is no one to participate because all of the aol'ers are at the convention, we would sure love it if you all would come over to the other cake chat room to visit. Here's the address if anyone is interested. //venus.beseen.com/chat/rooms/g/2143 Thanks for any and all help in advance. Mindy

We have that all taken care of! Earlene Moore has made some name tags.

Web decorators are planning to meet on Thursday evening during our LIVE
AOL chat. We'll pass the tags out then...or anytime we can find out. The
tags will have AOL on them, but everyone on the web should take one.
THIS is the only way we can find each other. Out chat will be at 8pm
Central time. I think it will be listed in our show booklet that we get
at registration. They have given us a room for 300 people (not kidding!)

Also, remind me (email - proicer@one.net)and I'll post that tag on my
Message board main page so you can print it out before you go to the
show. I'm at home or I'd send it up right now. Its at work. Sorry, this
has slipped my mind with all I have to do at the last minute.

Please wear the tag so we can find each other!
