Subject: ICES Travelling Information
Earlene Moore posted me this info and I thought it would help for those
who have never flown to a convention before.
What are the airline restrictions, now?
There are four of us going from here in Lubbock - flying. So Brenda
called to find out the dimensions we were limited to so that we could
plan our displays and boxes to put them in. It seem the last leg flight
is on a puddle jumper into St Paul. They told her these were the sizes
we had to stay under. Overhead 46 Wide, 17 High and 8 Deep although we
cannot use all of that 46" wide space. Under the seat they told her 16
Wide, 14 high and 9" deep. They would not tell her how much room is
between the seats so that we would not have to tilt our cakes to get
them under the seat in front of us. We figured that we might be able to
use 12" square boxes under the seats with 3" loss of foot space. That
8" deep on the overhead doesn't give us much to work with. It may be
really interesting if they get a whole plane full of ICES people with
cake displays. LOL It might be good for you and Dolores to put those
numbers out for the gals who are flying to know.
I don't remember you being escorted off the plane. What happened?
It was after the Grand Rapids show I think. I had taken my daughters
Bride and Groom from her wedding cake in a glass case. I had called the
airline for measurements and that glass case should have worked under
the seat. But it was about 1/8" to tall. So they escorted me off of
the plane. I took the bride and groom out of the glass case - they
shipped that home for me. And I had to hand carry that gumpaste couple
the rest of the trip home. I thought you were on that plane with me.
Just back further in the plane. Anyway there were at least another
dozen decorators on there and when I got back on the plane I got cheers.
LOL Another of one of those crazy things that we get ourselves into.

Oh, Laura, did you miss the big ICES convention in Orlando last year? It was one of our biggest, but I will also say it was the hottest, most humid place I have ever been! The midwest is bad, but Florida was worse. However, the convention was great as always. Don't know about cake shows there, but maybe someone else can help you with that. ICES convention this year is in St. Paul, Minnesota and next year, Kansas City (we), Missouri plays host to ICES. We had it in 1995 and it was one of the "best"!! Start planning to come now!!

Subject: Re: Levels of expertise info
I wish there were standard definitions! A little over a year ago, when
our local club had a cake show, someone threw together some definitions
that were hotly debated--a *major* source of controversy. So, to
prepare for our more recent cake show a couple of months ago, I sent out
a survey to everyone I could find who had a show in the last year. I
got about 10 responses, and guess what? Almost no two were the same in
terms of how they defined different levels.
We took what we thought was the best of everything we could get our
hands on, and came up with these definitions. While there were still a
couple of complaints (mostly from people who thought they should be in a
lower level than what these definitions put them in), these generally
went over pretty well.
BEGINNER: Anyone who has been decorating for two years or less, and has
had no more than two courses of cake decorating lessons.
(We didn't have intermediate; some people do.)
ADVANCED: One who has been decorating for several years, and who
decorates primarily as a hobby, and does not teach (or has not taught)
advanced cake decorating, OR who has completed at least three cake
decorating courses. Must not meet any of the qualifications under the
professional division.
PROFESSIONAL: One who has been decorating for several years, and who
qualifies under at least one of the following: derives more than 10% of
their earned income from the sale of cakes, or works in a commercial
bakery, or who teaches (or has taught) classes in advanced cake
decorating techniques, or who has taken the equivalent of a total of at
least 35 hours of instruction from a recognized professional teacher.
MASTERS: One who has been decorating for five years or more, and who
qualifies under at least one of the following: has had the equivalent
of 140 hours of professional classes or hands on seminars, or who is an
author/teacher of special techniques.
Will be interesting to see what others think.

Subject: Re: Levels of expertise info
I suppose the difference is whether you are searching for
"classifications" in order to decide how you should promote yourself or
for a cake show. I think the reason some folks balked at the ratings
Nannette listed is that about half of those entering fell into the
"advanced" category, so the competition was quite fierce (I believe
there were 15 or more cakes in the "advanced novelty/specialty cake"
category.)
Personally, I balked primarily at the wording. If the category had
just been called something like "non-professional" or "hobbyist" or
something, I'd probably have been okay. Personally, I feel that
calling myself "advanced" indicates more skills than I possess. (I may
have played around doing cakes for a couple of years, but I can't do
any of the basics like piping flowers or basketweave.) I'd certainly
NEVER tell a potential customer that I was an "ADVANCED" cake decorator.
So, if you're trying to determine what terminology to use to promote
yourself: whether you call yourself a "masterful decorating expert" or
an "accomplished, sensitive cake artisan", choose one that clearly and
accurately represents your skill level and expertise.

In Cross Stitch (XS) there are levels that would define your expertise
at the conventions. Example:
XS Cake Deco.
Beginner: Basic XS, can follow a graph. = Beg:Has had 1 dec. course.
Level 1: Canvas work = Lev 1:Basic Fig.Piping&rose
Level 2: Pulled work,hardanger = Lev2: Tier,adv flowers
and so on.
It was more based so that at convention, XS there are about 5 levels,
you didn't take a class that was over your head or wasn't what you
though it would be. The levels were based on the tasks that were
mastered.
I think this would be a better system, two people can decorate for the
same years and make the same price for cakes. But one could far exceed
the skill level of the other and be in the same category.
IMHO.
