RED CAR: I trimmed it to the shape of my son-in-law’s hotrod. I sat the cake in our driveway to photograph it (for the rocks underneath).
PINK CAR: Trim off some from the large piece for this one. It is shorter. Ice pink and add tip 104 ruffles. (This was requested for a girl’s 16th birthday and the customer wanted it to look feminine).
BLUE CAR: Do this car as shown in Diagram.
PURPLE CAR: Was covered with rolled fondant

NEEDED:
8 1/2 X 11 INCH CAKE (1 mix)
CARDBOARD for the car to sit on ..the same size as the largest part of car (Use 2 cardboards together for added strength).
10 X 14-INCH CARDBOARD for finished car
STYROFOAM (I use house insulation styrofoam. It is cheap and just the right thickness).
OREO COOKIES for wheels
BUTTERCREAM ICING: Yellow for headlights, red for tail lights, black-gray for windows and chosen car color (darker for outlining is nice).
DIRECTIONS:
1. Bake an 8 1/2 x 11 inch cake and place on a cake rack to cool
2. CAR TOP: Cut off 1 long side as dotted lines shown. Cut piece in half.
ASSEMBLY:
1. Cut a piece of cardboard the same size as the bottom part of car. Wrap the cardboard in foil and tape underneath.
2. Cut a 1-inch thick piece of styrofoam slightly smaller than the car.
3. Place styrofoam on 10x14-inch foil-wrapped cardboard, secure with icing.
4. Place largest cake on the foil-wrapped cardboard.
5. Place the cut pieces together with icing underneath and between. Try to place the car top slightly toward the back if you want a longer hood than trunk for your car. Trim windows slanted, if desired.
WINDOWS:
With thinned down icing, (add water), ice the sides of the cut pieces with gray icing.
TIP: Don’t stir the black coloring in so well, allowing for a streaked affect like glass reflection.
CAR BODY:
1. Add OREO cookies for wheels. Decorate tip 3 as desired.
2. Using desired car color icing (or slightly darker shade), outline tip 4 around windows, doors, headlights, tail lights, grill, etc...
3. Star fill-in tip18 desired color car.
4. Pipe a bumper the same color as the car.
5. Pipe yellow headlights, tip 4-5 and smooth icing with a dab of water on your finger.
6. Pipe tail lights and smooth as above.
TIPS: Icing cut cake: Always add water to thin icing down. Airbrush an icing road on the cardboard.
Add tip 233 green grass and sprinkle flowers.
I once shaped this into a mail truck by cutting it shorter like the pink car.
If more servings are needed, you could sit this cake on a half sheet-11x15 or 12x18 inch.
You will need to cut straws and place in the sheet cake underneath the styrofoam piece for support.
