Over the years we've learned a few
things that make our cake decorating go along faster and more smoothly.
I'm sharing some with you.
TIRED OF SORTING
THROUGH PLASTIC LAY-ONS?
Separate them according to subject.
Baby Shower -Teens - Boy/Girl -
Gold/Silver - Sports ---etc. I use clear plastic boxes so I can see through
them. The busier you get, the more boxes and categories you will have,
of course.
CLEANING YOUR CAKE
TIPS:
Have you ever tried cleaning
them a different way? (Not using the tip brush)
This is what we do: Place all soiled
tips in a container (needs a lid). Pour liquid soap over them. Then get
your tap water REAL hot and fill the container full. Next day, drain &
add more soap & hot water. Put on the lid and shake. Drain on a paper
towel. (We may wash a hundred on Fridays...couldn't clean those with a
tip brush!)
REFERENCE
FILE
Have you ever noticed just how long
it takes you to come up with an idea, or worse still, to find an idea you
KNOW you saw somewhere?
We made ourselves a reference
file. I can gladly report to you that it is working just wonderfully
well.
Here's how we did it:
1. We used our word processor to
create and edit the Reference File. (We use Word for Windows).
2. Just create a new file or document
and save it as whatever name you'd like to call it.
3. Go through your cake patterns
and books to find the ideas for cakes that you are interested in doing.
TIP: If you keep each
idea on only one line, you can make this file alphabetical.
AND
YOU MUST!
4. When you finish (each time you
add something too) just format alphabetically and print it out.
5. Simply make this into a booklet
in whatever manner you like and you are ready to put it to use.
You can use this file forever. You should
keep it updated. But even if you don't, you can use it as far as it goes.
CAKE ICER TIP UPDATE
MAKING FLOWERS ON
A NAIL
Did you ever
think there was something to make this job go faster? Well, there is a
way! Great for buttercream or royal icings. USE FLORIST CLAY ON YOUR
NAIL instead of gluing wax paper squares on with icing! Florist clay
isn't easy to find anymore. You may have to search for it. It is usually
available wherever florist supplies are sold, or in craft stores. Under
$10.00 for enough to last you 4 lifetimes!
At Sugarcraft,
we sell it in small amounts that won't dry up before you can use it all.
Order
Here
1. Pinch off
a VERY small amount and spread it on the center of your flower nail.
2. Smooth
it down so you can barely feel it. if you get too much, your tip won't
slide accross the nail smoothly. Sometimes it doesn't even wash off when
washing the nail. I leave it on as long as it stays there. I use a different
nail for buttercream roses that I am not using wax papers for.
3. Simply
place your wax paper square on the nail. Over and over, you'll never need
to re-stick, like you do with icing. Flower making goes a lot faster when
you don't have to worry about forgetting to add a bit of icing to glue
wax paper on your nail.
