HOW TO MAKE A WEB PAGE

THIS IS MY CHEAT SHEET. iF ANYONE LESE WISHES TO ADD TO IT, PLEASE EMAIL ME WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE ADDED HERE.

PRIVATE WEB SITE:
Your ISP allows you FREE space for a web site. AOL and some others allow only 5MB for your web site. Mine allows 60MB. Try and choose an ISP according to your needs.

COMMERCIAL WEB SITE:
GETTING A DOMAIN NAME: Before you can have a commercial web site you must acquire a domain name. Mine is called sugarcraft.com All of these usually end in ‘.com’ A domain name is secured through a worldwide source. No one in the world is allowed to acquire the same domain name as yours.   You cannot use a name of choice if it is already in use. The easiest way to do this is to contact your ISP for this web site and let them lead you through it.
The company that does the search and finally issues you the domain is located here: www.networksolutions.com
Your domain name search will cost $100.00 and $20.00 every two years to keep your domain name active.

CHOOSING AN ISP FOR A COMMERCIAL WEB SITE: Your existing ISP may allow you space. They WILL charge you an extra fee. If your ISP is too expensive or doesn’t allow commercial web sites, there are several alternatives. Mine is at http://www.concentric.com in Sanoma Valley California. This involves NO long distance calls ever. A commercial web site can reside anywhere. Choose the one that gives you the best deal.

SOME THINGS TO ASK ABOUT:
‘HITS’ allowed - web site? And the cost if I want to add more space?
I am allowed 5 gigabytes. FYI - 3 gigabytes may be adequate.
‘HITS’ allowed in ‘CGI’? FYI - This is more complicated and I am not sure how to explain it. Some don’t limit this at all. CGI-BIN is where your shopping cart resides for orders.
‘WEB SPACE ‘allowed - This is the space allowed for your files on the ISP’s computer. 60 to 100 MB is common. See if you will be allowed to buy more if necessary. Extra space shouldn’t be very costly.

Your commercial web site should cost you around $100.00 per month average for the above specifications.

HOW TO MAKE A WEB PAGE

Go online and do the following software:
1.) Go to http://www.netscape.com Download Netscape 4.6 for Windows 95 or 98. (Also available for a MAC). Takes about 2 1/3 hours to download. You will download one file called sd_cc32e46en.exe  FREE - Next install it on your computer. Let Netscape go into the folder it suggests. Just follow the instructions.
2.) WS_FTP95LE - used to upload your files which will be residing on your ISP’s server - small file. Install it wherever you like. NOT avail for Mac users.
Tip: I put the shortcut icons for Composer, Communicator and WS_FTP95LE on my desktop for easy access.
3.) Make a directory on your computer called WEBPAGE, to save all web pages in, wherever is most convenient for you. I alter mine so often that I like it on the ROOT. You can later make other sub folders for your files

MAKING THE PAGE: At first it took me a lot of trial and error.
1.) Open Netscape COMPOSER. Netscape is 2-part:
a.  Communicator (used to browse the Internet)
b.  b. Composer (used to compose web pages).
2.) On the pull-down menus, see FILE. Choose NEW BLANK PAGE.
3.) Save this main ‘home’ page as index.html (no other name!).
4.) You are ready to GO! Try it…type something. Save it, etc. Or copy/paste a text file you have ready.
5.) Try this…insert an image: On the pull-down menus at the top, choose INSERT IMAGE. Find any image that is on your computer and click OK. This puts a picture on your page. There are many additional features. But right now you can start using only this.

CREATE A HYPERLINK (or LINK): Open index.html page in Netscape Composer. Highlight a word or group of words you want to link a picture or another page to. Go to the pull-down menu INSERT /LINK. In the box that pops up there are 2 bars to fill in. For the upper one you can put anything…like ‘beautiful cake picture’ etc. In the lower box you must put the link...like: http://www.sugarcraft.com/mycake.jpg (if it is a link to a picture).
Or, for a link to a file put: http://www.sugarcraft.com/myotherpage.htm

NOTE TO ALL WEBMASTERS: Other than index.html which is your HOME page, all other pages can be named anything...but must end with dot htm .htm

GRAPHICS/PHOTOS etc: If you have TIF pictures you'd like to include or insert, you must first convert them to JPG (best for color) or GIF (best for 1-2 colors or black & white ones) You must have software for converting from TIF to JPG or GIF...shareware Paintshop Pro is good. I use Hijaak.

FOR GETTING YOUR PAGE ONLINE
If you use AOL:
1. USE KEYWORD my place...ADD TO YOUR FAVORITES MENU. Read all about this ON AOL. It tells you exactly how.
2. Go to the My Place (icon)
3. Upload anything.htm or picture files one at a time. On AOL you may not be able to use WS_FTP95LE. You can try calling AOL for instructions for the host path. Mac users cannot use this ftp software. There is another one you can use. Earlene Moore has information for this one… pwdsugar@door.net

MOST USERS - USING ANY OTHER ISP (not AOL):
WS_FTP95LE: Setup…You must do a couple of things, Open WS_FTP and:
Add your Host Name/Address - mine is: ftp.sugarcraft.com.cnchost.com. Don’t change anything else. Just add your user name and password. Sometimes you need a bit more info in your User name. If you can’t log onto your web site you must now contact your ISP for additional directions. It won’t take much. You are almost there.

From your Desktop, open WS_FTP95LE. You will see files on your computer to your left. The window at right should show your files or your web site. If you highlight a page or picture and click your mouse on the horizontal arrow pointing right, the file uploads (goes into your web site at right.)
Once you get the files uploaded, always check to see if you can open them online. Check and see that all links are working too.

WS_FTP95LE RULES:
? NO spaces in a file name:  my picture.jpg (will not upload).  But mypicture.jpg WILL upload.)
? End all pages with .htm - unless they are a picture, then do as above and end these with .gif or .jpg. MACS can use 4 letter ending...JPEG - TIFF etc. (I think!) I’ve never had a Mac. Macs use an alternative method for recognizing file types.

LINKING: Other cake decorators will want to trade 'links' with you to their web page. They may write asking you to trade links. So you need a page file called links.htm - and put your links all here...including mine. Mine is http://w3.one.net/~proicer/index.html

Re: designing a web site

Becky, there are a lot of ways to design a website, depending on how computer literate you are. You can design a website using nothing but Notepad if you
know how to write HTML code. If you do a search for HTML, you will find tons of tutorial sites that will give you the basics. If you don't want to go that
route, an investment in a software package made for building websites is probably a good bet, something like Microsoft FrontPage. You can download some
free software from the web for doing this kind of thing if you search for it. CuteHTML is a decent product.

You can also copy the code from a page you see that you like, and replace the pertinent information with your own. It's not terribly difficult, but it will take
some time.
---

What I sent another time...maybe the different 'wording' will help, Dolores:
1. You make the web page(s)
2. You upload them to your server.
FIRST: You can put this on the server (ISP) you use...AOL is one for instance. Once you get it made you upload it to your  server. They allow you a certain amount of space. This will stop all the slow loading. Geocities uses those ads to make money LOL.

You do not need to know html codes. I don't and I've made hundreds of web pages. Simply download Netscape and use Netscape Composer. (I hear that the new Netscape is not good. See if you can get any before ver7). Install it. If you are on aol, don't make it your default browser when asked. With aol, you log on aol, then open Netscape and disregard aol...its waaay faster!

Then open Composer. Write something...insert an image etc...change fonts, change font size...anything. Fun! You can 'preview' to see what its going to look like online.

One thing about images being slow loading....when you scan, scan at 100 dpi or less. The web can't read any better quality anyway...and high resolution makes BIG slow-loading pictures. Save pictures as anything.jpg

Rule: Don't make capitol letters and don't use any spaces in the file names. ALL files must end in .thm or .html...your first one must end in .html (Your home page.) Many times it also must be called index.html. The 'index' is important.

Now it is made...to get it online: If you are on AOL, you go to MY PLACE and you will see 'upload' You'll have to save that path...you'll see it at the top of your screen. Don't forget to copy it down!

IF you are not on aol, you can use Netscape to upload files...I do all the time.

OR: I also use WS_FTP95 (this is a wonderful easy program to use to upload your files. You see your local computer on the left and your web site online on the right. And you just 'click' and on the file flies!

Hope this helps...going to save this all on our FAQ page too...
