Hi MC Scow Fleet,
Well the prior fleet captain reminded me (easy to do since we work at
the same place) that there are is some important info you need to know
about.
CLSA Open House
May 20th CLSA will hold it's annual open house. We should have an MC
Scow represented to show perspective new members the benefits of
sailing an MC. If you are willing to volunteer for this please contact me
during the day at the number below or at home (513-576-0307)
After Race Dinner
As in past years we would like to remind you that on the second Sunday
of each month a the fleet members get together after the races for some
comradery. Bring you own dinner and share your experiences.
Hoover Regatta
Phil, Judy and I went to the Hoover regatta the last weekend in April.
It was windy and cool and Judy and I tried out our new Quantum sails.
Unfortunately for Judy and I we bought light/medium sails which should
be the right thing for Cowan but wasn't right on a 10 to 20 weekend.
While Phil was very respectable as usual Judy and I struggled.
Spring Series
So far 7 of us have been in one or more the spring series races with 5
in the first race. Get your boat ready and join us.
See you on the water,
Tom.

1/22/05 - A special thanks to Judy Hearn for hosting the MC Fleet 45 Winter dinner! At the Winter dinner, Michael Graham was awarded the 2004 Fleet Captain's Most Imrpoved Skipper's Award. Bill Landis won the second-half of the season silver fleet.

8/04/04 - 20th Michigan Championship, Diamond Lake, Cassopolis, MI. Racing Report.
7/24/05 - Mid-Season Report:
* 14 MC Skipper's have started the races.
* The fleet has average 5.76 MCs starting per race (This includes a small turn out for the July 4th Regatta and a few races in the Spring with only two MCs racing).
* The fleet had 4 races with 9 MCs racing and many races with 7 or 8.
* According to my records the winds have averaged an usually high 9.7 mph for Cowan Lake, although this average has been dropping recently.
* The fleet has had 4 fleet dinners with the next after racing dinner scheduled for August 8th.
* At the next dinner, I need to pass out 4 silver fleet ribbons and 1 or more patches!
* Racing is extremely close at this point in the season. My calculations are UNOFFICIAL, but here is what I have for the overall season championship (with 29 maximum races left). Granting skippers 15% throw outs and not hypothesizing future throw out finishes or the number of total races a skipper will sail - Dave is in the lead by approximately 10 finishes (points) over the 2nd place group. There are 3 boats in the 2nd place group, separated by 2.66 finishes (points), 5th and 6th place are separated by 5 finishes (points), and 6th, 7th, and 8th by 10 finishes (points). In other words overall places can change in one Sunday's worth of racing. The silver fleet is wide-open with the second half series starting on July 25th running through the rest of the CLSA season.
* The Cowan Scow'n Regatta on 10/3-10/4 is 71 days away.

5/11/04 - CLSA Open House (From Ken Irwin):
In the interest of fleet growth, we should take advantage of our opportunities.
On Saturday, May 29 at 1:00, we are having an open house. It would be good to have someone their with their boat rigged to show your stuff! Even offer interested people short rides. Also, keep in mind there are two MC Scows listed for sale on our website. - Ken Irwin, Membership Chairman

4/13/04 - MC sailors: Please be advised that, per the attached, our vice-commodore is looking for volunteers to assist with the club's Memorial Day Party. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Karen directly @ fs401k@yahoo.com

Subject: Committee Members needed for Memorial Day Party
Dear Fleet Captains,
I need your help in identifying 1 person from your fleet to be on the Memorial Day Holiday party committee. The plans are pretty well made but I will need help the day of the party which is May 30, 2004 at 5 PM. It may be a good way for some eager new comers to be involved. The jobs will
be to sit at the registration table, grill hamburgers, set tables, organize the food tables, setup the beer cooler and drinks and then of course clean up.
Please give them my email or phone number. Thanks so much.

Check out the MC Scow 2004 Yearbook front and back cover!! The photo is from a previous Cowan Scow’n regatta. Carl Pratt is in the lead (#1887), followed by Phil Weiler (#1755), Jack Sanderson (#1625), and Alan Hickman (#1998). The wind was light that race. The boats are heading upwind with their booms out to the stern corner of the boat and slightly above hull parallel level caused by minimal vang tension. Also, the boats are healed on their leeward side to reduce wetted surface/water friction. You might wonder why the boats are sailing in a line and receiving disturbed wind from the boats ahead. The best answer that I can provide is that the wind pressure and/or direction was coming from the shore side of lake (left in the photo) and probably channeling down the CLSA clubhouse hill, which strongly favors the port tack that these boats are sailing on. The trailing boats probably decided that it was better to continue sailing in disturbed wind and take the loss in speed and pointing ability than to head off in the opposite direction and increase the risk of falling even farther behind this pack of boats. Another explanation might be that this pack of boats has reached the port layline to the windward (or left side finishing mark) and have run out of options other than to continue on course.

Notes:
* The more competive the fleet usually the more off Cowan Lake regattas are attended, which tends to decrease a fleet's stats
* The Laser fleet (LS) is a new and a growing fleet
* The largest fleet above, the Flying Scott's (FS), comprise almost one-third of the racing stats.
